The Found Boat by Alice Munro

In "The Found Boat" the main characters Eva, Carol, Frank, Bud and Clayton found a boat in the middle of a flood that happens every five years during the spring. The setting sounds to be in the south as the accent of the kids sound like a southern accent. The plot is that Eva the protagonis likes Clayton who is the antogonist. They are individual characters who act like any other youth as they are young. The conflict is external as Clayton can say mean things about Eva, it is a game for him and his friends. Eva does not seem to care what he says but it should eventually hurt her. The story is told in third person omniscient litmited. A good theme for this story could be Do onto other what you like done onto you'.

I could really see this story played many times in real life. Young kids like to hurt others becasue they find pleassure on that or maybe they think they are cool. I liked the fact that is a newer story, but I like the older ones because I think they have more meaning, I know I probably should not think like this because new stories will come up and they could be as famous as the older ones. Maybe other stories are better, I did not like this one in particular because I think the boys are mean to the girls and they do not have any respect for themselves. At the end when they play Truth or Dare they showed the girls how mean they could be, they did not care to leave them behind not caring how they would get back to their home.

Were they really being mean, or was it all just part of "playing the game" that young people do when they are discovering who they are??? 4/4
