The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant

The Necklace is a pretty common story, where the protagonist, Mathilde Loisel, is not happy with the things she has. She was born to a poor family composed of artisans. She always dreamt of having a better live, but whoever said that being rich gives people happiness. I am sure that people can be happy having money but there are other things in life that give us happiness too.

She is a dreamer who never settles with what she has. She often complains of the husband she has, she had desired to have a rich husband, but her poor husband loves her indeed. Maybe she would not have been happy having a rich husband. The setting takes place in France. I liked the plot because things were had a very bad outcome because of her desire to be rich. The conflict is external because Mathilde always wanted to be better in life and because of this she and her husband end up with a big debt which first of all demonstrates his love for her and it gives them a real hard time as it mentions that at the end of the ten years when they finally finish paying their debt she looks old. The antagonists are the people that let Mr. Loisel barrow the money because they were charging a lot of interest. The conflict is also Man vs Himself since the trouble had to be solved by her, it was something she had troubles with just in her head. The story is told in third person omniscient objective. The theme could be Love your life the way it is. The author uses comparison and contrast and irony.

Reyna--
Nice analysis so far, but don't forget to add a paragraph with your reaction/response.
